Marine Litter:
The Facts
Environment & Animals
Ingestion: The presence of plastic in rivers and seas can have a detrimental effect on the environment and wildlife. Once plastic finds its way into the environment, it can accidentally be ingested by animals such as birds, fish or crustaceans. Sometimes animals can be attracted to particular items because of their colour and form.
Entanglement: Wildlife can also become tangled in plastic and other items such as discarded fishing line or nets.

Environment
When litter pollutes our environment, it also encourages more litter, as well as having negative effects on the community and economy – reducing economic activity related to the environment, such as tourism or fishing. It also costs the local community to clean up litter.
